Worse than 1974? Two NATO states waging war against each other. Greece and Turkey, remember? The reason for the division in the midst of Cyprus and the main reason why Greece, although broke by all accounts, entertains a behemoth of an army compared to the size of the country.
Two NATO states, of course no other NATO state will choose sides. The Kurds don't have that sort of standing, it's a different kettle of fish.
