Yet you can't argue that what you call the extreme left (definition needed) is responsible for many violent acts these days. There may be some, but they're far too disorganized to rise to a similar threat level as in the 70ies, maybe the 80ies.
I would also argue that the IRA has been a right wing organisation rather than a left one. They were nationalists as well as adding catholicism to their brand. That's not the hallmark of the left.
What's not up for debate is that organisations like the RAF in Germany, the Brigate Rosse in Italy or similar ones across Europe were extreme leftists.
