Don't go too crazy with counting calories; it can become a chore. You want to stay in the game. Once you get yourself on track, your daily regimen will become a natural thing. For what it's worth from a total stranger - I wish you much success.
With all due respect, I think counting calories isn't that hard, and it can really help make dietary choices.
Once think I learned was I can make some really yummy fried vegetables-- a LOT of them, eat them with a bowl of rice, and not too many calories. But if I eat one or two slices of "health" bread, my caloric budget is fucked.
