RE: Another "how could any intelligent woman be a Christian?" thread

It all comes down to a few things:
1. "It was the culture at the time!"
This implies that God isn't powerful enough to demand that women be treated equally. It also raises the question--why didn't god wait several hundred years to come to earth as he allegedly did?
2. (Variation) "It was the interpretation of the culture of the time of God's word."
This makes you wonder why God hasn't issued a new word to replace all of this in all these years. It also calls into question the veracity of the bible. How many other things in the bible are just interpretation?
3. Cherrypicking. Christians have a habit of tossing out the verses they don't like. It's become customary. The bible is now a choose your own adventure. If you don't like it, you can throw it out. If you think it's important (like Homosexuality) it's 100% god's word, and anyone who suggests otherwise is a dirty heathen!
4. Culture. We're raised in a culture where religion still dominates. They're aided by the few good actions they actually do (justifying all the awful and terrible things they do by using god as a crutch). The church does good, so the church should be good. And all the bad they do isn't really bad, it's god's will. Because everything is okay if it's God's will. Just like God drowning 99% of the world's population is apparently perfectly moral and just because God says it is.
5. They justify it because Eve ate the fruit (I hear it was a Quince)
6. They themselves are misogynists. (See: Phylis Schlafly)

The whole tone of Church teaching in regard to woman is, to the last degree, contemptuous and degrading. - Elizabeth Cady Stanton
