I will admit I'm surprised when I hear some historical figures were gay. Maybe with how illegal and repressed it used to be, it's easy to forget gay people actually existed before the 1960s tbh.
One could argue that even the concept of homosexuality as we're familiar with it was created at the turn of the 20th century. Categorizing sexualities is very much a modern, Western thing. So I think you could get away with saying that "gay" people didn't exist before Would War II. There was no "straight" or "gay" before the West decided to make it so. At least, that's what Focoult argues, and I agree.
