I like to shoot. I've spent alot of time and money getting good at it. It;s a perishable skill. At some point, you may want to shoot a particular target, or within a particular range that your current firearm is not suited for. Or maybe you want to get into 3-gun competition. So, like any sport, you buy the gear. I started out with a bb gun. Only a monster tries to kill a deer with a bb gun. It won't reach out to hit a long range pop-up. So, you get a 22 (probably a pellet gun between bb and 22). The 22 -can- hit the target at range...still dicey for deer (but you can get a squirrel). So you step up again. Maybe you branch out. a 20g shotgun (slugs for deer, shot for fowl)...all of this depends on the laws in your state and hunting season restrictions. Maybe you want to hunt early, you'll need a black powder rifle. Maybe you can only hunt with 20 slugs. Maybe the state in question has deemed some round "insufficiently lethal" and so, again, back for more gear. Maybe you want to challenge yourself with a bigger chambering in your target rifles action. More gear.
You may not want every idiot to be entitled to a deadly wepon, but every idiot -isn't- entitled to a deadly weapon...so....what are we talking about? I don;t -need- a gun either. Very few people, if any, do...but that's not relevant either, is it? You don;t -need- chocolate, americans don't -need- mcdonalds. What is it that we're supposed to come to from that statement? That based upon the real or perceived lack of a need.....some x?
