The news kept telling us 100+mph winds in orlando (I live 15 mins from down town) And our business is in sanford just mabe 2 mins from the st.johns rive so storm surge was also a big scare factor.
Spent two days prepping the business and made it home just intime to beat the curfuew, then my dad called wanting me to go back to my shop and bring him a generator "just incase." He told me "life is rough and I had to weather the storm to get a generator for your mother" I told him to tell her "life is rough" and I am not going anywhere durning this storm...
All of that and nothing.. except the internet went down. Turns out the little box on the side of the house leaked and shorted out the wires.. After a couple days of drying out she went back on.
After the storm went to check on my parents and my dad was mad BECAUSE THE LIGHTS STAYED ON, when he had bought into all the hype Governor scott was selling.. (IF you are in an Evac zone and have not evacuated 'YOU WILL DIE!' We are not comming to get you)
I seriously think next time we elect a governor he needs to be born and raised in Florida. This douche bag panicked because of all the devastation that he saw on the news from other states. In 04 we were hit with charley francess and jeane all in a 6 week period, not to mention we had all the rain of our normal rainny season to contend with as well and we sustained less damage than NYC did during sandy. then in 05 we were hit by wilma and kartina both cat 5 storms. and weather both well. It's not about the strength of the storm but the area the storm hits. Elevation, ground saturation and drainage all play into damage.
This guy only seemed to look at one metric, and then proceed to panic everyone about how the sky was falling. So rather than explain and apologize how/what went wrong with their predictions. the show pics of the one or two heavily damaged sites and pat themselves on the back for making the right calls.
What this will do is desensitize people like in katrina/new Orleans, So when we take a direct hit from a cat 5 storm fewer people actually actually get out of placed where they truly do need to evacuate.
