They are helpful in keeping track of and dividing quantities. Say I have 4 apples and I want to give 3 people an equal amount of apple, I'd give each person an apple and a third. But I didn't include myself so now I have no apple.
I could say I have zero apples but here is where zero becomes problematic. I have 0 apples in the same way I have 0 pumpkins, 0 purple elephants, 0 tickets to Mars and 0 post cards from Andromeda. There are probably multiple infinities of things that I have zero of.
If just said "I have zero..." You'd probably ask "Zero what?" and that would be an extremely long list.
