I hate the word "allowed". You can get any religious person in the west to say "we allow', that is why I don't like that word. No human, theist or atheist are pets or house guests. It is what Jews in Israel claim in setting up their social pecking order. It is the same line you get from Christians about America with "Christian nation". And you can and do also get Muslism who claim there was no trouble when they had control of Palestine and Israel and they too "allow" other religions.
What allows people in the west the freedom to hold the positions they do is what is important, but lets be careful in using the word "allow', because to the theist, they take that to mean "you are welcome in my house, but just remember it is my house".
Common law is what allows someone to be Christian or Muslim or Jew or atheist or Buddhist, not religion itself.
