Tentatively I'm feeling better now... enough to have the light on without it coming back
So I think that damp cloth helped - so thanks for the suggestion 
I have mixed feelings about how to deal with pain like that. The Buddhist in me wants to accept it as it is and explore it without trying to change it or remove it... basically to kind of meditate on it. But the rest of me thinks, fuck that
in this case I did a bit of both and found it a relatively rewarding experience, at some points feeling like I was getting there in feeling detached from it and perceiving it in a different way. But overall still being a long way from total non-attachment.
