Also how does a belief in karma or reincarnation equate to a belief in god? Where exactly are you closing that gap? What if karma is some universal force that needs know intelligent intervention behind it? What if reincarnation is just some natural process like photosynthesis or the water cycle?

1) The point is all about challenges that keep the mind in constant exercise.
Some people exercise their muscles.
I prefer more to exercise my mind by challenging other people intellect.
2) If karma exist then it need reincarnation.
Suppose Mr X kill 50 people.
One life would not be enough to pay for his crimes so he will have to be born again and again
and suffer what those 50 people suffer.
3) If you don't like to call God that entity that run the karma system you may well call any other name
you like but someone must be there to witness what goes on and correct the imbalance.
