They no longer believed in the carrot, and so the stick was unbearable. Hardly suprising, from ex-believers. When you don;t -believe- in god anymore, all that's left is that lifetime of hammered in shame and guilt...but that's not -why- they don't believe anymore. The shame and guilt was always there, while they believed...so obviously it must be something else.
You don't seem to be interested in any notion that what -you- believe about gods, religions, or religious people..or irreligious people isn't accurate. You took an opportunity to ask, and get a definitive answer for your quesion, instead, as an opppurtunity to double down on the prior stated belief. Why not ask a -believer- if they think that their beliefs are uplifting? Why not ask a non-believer whether or not your appraisal of their motivations are true? Would you rather not know?

Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
