I can tell you for a fact, plenty of guys are biased against women. Even some pretty liberal guys. So many times I've participated in conversations about that touch on supposedly "male" subjects like science and philosophy where the guys talk to each other and ignore or are hyper-critical of anything women say on the subject. You don't know how discouraging that can be.
And that's just one example of sexism. People have mentioned plenty of others in this thread. I really wish more guys could see how real sexism is. Guess that makes me appreciate the guys who do so much more.
What is most egregious is when male privilege is defended by collaborative women. In my wife's first marriage her husband was a sculptor and painter (of little renown) who got a grant (which she had written for him) to live and work in Sweden for a year. This was before she'd been through graduate school herself.
She often tells of a visit they paid to another artist's house for dinner. The other woman's husband only engaged Lia's ex in conversation but she naturally joined in too. But the guy's wife grew more and more uncomfortable looking until she finally told Lia she had no right to speak about art. Lia's ex can be a dick but she says one thing she appreciated was that he didn't harbor any such prejudice.
The rest of the story is Lia's ex became more and more dissatisfied with her ambition for him which manifest when she would try to enlist his participation in her efforts to write grants for him (the stupid bastard). At one point she quit writing for him and started writing for herself. After their year in Sweden where she first studied weaving she went to graduate school where she studied under Ed Rossbach at Cal. She went on to have quite a successful career and would only agree to participate in workshops or short teaching stints which also made a place for him. Then one time he hit on (meaning actually screwed) one of her students and eventually they split. Something about the mindset of guys just a little bit older than myself -Trump for example- really do/did make them feel obliged to actually bed as many women as they could - married or not. Yuck.
