I don't think his campaign promises were explicitly racist. But the initial promise to exclude all Muslim immigrants was clearly an appeal to bigotry. His castigating a judge hearing his case as being unfair because of his race was also a balloon released so the bigots in this country could see where Trump stood. The wall, while being aimed nominally at illegal aliens, had a racist element insofar as there's no other initiative to take care of the other 50% of the illegal immigration.
He never said, "I hate spics and will work to keep them out of the country", you're right. But his racism was obvious to anyone with two neurons functioning. Anyone who could look past his base racism and vote for him should be asking themselves long, hard questions.
To be fair, "Muslim" is a religion, not a race lol. Sorry, I know it doesn't make it any less ridiculous to not allow people of a certain faith into the country, but it's a pet peeve of mine that people keep referring to anything anti Muslim as "racist" when Muslim isn't a race.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."
