My grandfather, who fought at the Eastern Front in WWI always told me he only fired in the air and never once aimed at someone. I believed him when I was a kid. Now I'm not so sure. This was the time of charges after all and I find it hard to imagine that you don't try to fend of attackers by any disposable means if your own life depends on it.
