The Platinum Rule implies that you already know how the other person wants to be treated. I don't know the preferences of a stranger. However, I'm willing to bet 100% of people you survey will say they want to be, at the least, treated with respect by others. I know I do. So I do the same to others. Find me somebody who wants to be treated like shit and yeah, I guess the Golden Rule is out. As for the door thing... who prefers opening their own doors? When people use the term "hold the door open", do they mean holding it open behind them after they've already gone through it or do they mean opening it from the outside and waiting for the person to go through before them? Because I do the former for everyone (not just women) and I don't really do the latter (except for people who have a ton of shit in their hands and can't hold the door themselves.)

So if we're walking into a building and I notice you're behind me, I'm going to let the door slam in your face instead of keeping it open for an extra second. Got it.

Also, I'm a New Yorker. I ain't got time to ask a million people how they feel about door-opening. I'm just gonna choose to do something and if they really feel that annoyed by it then that's their problem.
