How, exactly, would you figuratively play it for 72 hours? Why did you feel the need to add literally to your sentence? I'm not sure of any idiomatic use for specified amounts of time. If you had, for example, said, "I've played this game for three days straight" it could be modified with the use of literally before the word "played" to augment your meaning such that I would realize that you haven't been playing a lot for three days, but literally every hour in a three day span.
Yes, the missuse of the word literally IS a pet peeve of mine.
