1-Peaceful bystander or not the dropping the nukes on cities was wrong and was not the only strategy on the table .And by the time the nukes were used  Japan was in ruins and it's capacity to live up to it's bluff of death to the end was just that a bluff . I suggest reading Yoshijirō Umezu  memoirs of the last days it clearly shows Japan was finished.
