I have no idea how true this is, but it's something to look into. I'll admit that I'm not personally interested enough to do any more research into the idea.
Actually, the increase in reporting has more to do with better methods for detection, and a less prejudicial attitude to certain mental conditions like autism. Very few autistic people cand do what you describe, that perception is very much an artefact of media misreporting and popular fiction, like Rain Man.
