The "here's this, so you can relate to my rant" part:
Everyone knows them. The ones who never talk to you unless they need something.
You a dentist? They want a free filling.
You a doctor? Diagnose them. Sign a prescription. Fix their boobs.
You a mechanic? Fix their car.
Stay at home mom or dad? Run some errands for them. You got time, right? Eff.
Fuck. There's even the cousin that doesn't remember your name, but the moment he gets whipped into a pyramid scheme, he visits you and wants to help you become rich. Forget the fact that he's broke.
People want it for free, though. If not, they throw out a degrading offer. Oh! You are a tattoo artist? Can you give me a family discount for the five hours you'll spend on my back on something I'll get to show off to my friends for the rest of my life? Because, what artist doesn't like to put a discount on her art? Eff! Eff I tell you!
The "here's my complaint" part
I write stuff. In Spanish. Won't get into details of what kind of stuff (no, not erotica), but I do it. I wrote something for someone as a favor after reading what she wrote and realizing it was crap. She needed this, because her family is completely broke. They got the money they needed out of it, which made them come back for more. I've invested a lot of time and effort in doing this for them for the last three months, and they have been able to get the money they needed (important cause) that they would NOT have been granted otherwise.
During the last two weeks, they requested two projects with a strict deadline. A deadline. It was a lot for me, since I have a full time job, two kids, and a poetry event I'm organizing in my county for next month. I did it, though. She calls me today to tell me I missed a spot. I forgot to address something and she wants me to fix it by tomorrow. You serious now? You can't do that yourself? The entitlement in her voice!
I'm done. How did I fall into it? They received around 5k for what I have written for them, and I missed a spot. Go away. Go!
The "how I bring you into the conversation" part
End rant. Anyone else got some complain' to do 'bout being too nice you get screwed over? If not, I'll at least accept kudos, ya know, to make me feel better. Do it out of your heart and don't miss a spot.
What gall. Now that they've gotten so much for free, it's going to be tough to wean them off. I suggest that you read The Art of Selfishness By David Seabury. And charge for your work!
