Probably was. Accepting the name wasn't required on his part though - his supporters knew that ACA was Obamacare, whereas his critics and anti-fans wilfully obscured the relation so they could have a strawman to demolish.
Since the Fox News-fed lot had bought the delusion that ACA was not Obamacare, all it took was "Repeal (and maybe replace...)!" to drum up support, knowing full well that such support was based on a lie.
Obama mismanaged the Democratic party pretty badly and has his other mistakes, but I think judging him by his critics unfair and incorrect labeling of the ACA to create a strawman is... off. You can not satisfy an unfair critic - all they do is change the goalposts. Perhaps he though (erroneously) that by claiming the Obamacare name he could relink it as ACA, one and the same.
It didn't work, namely because the people who angrily react to the word Obamacare have a low chance of even listening to, let alone be persuaded by, Obama. And those who already know that Obamacare is an alias for ACA didn't gain much from him seizing the name.
