For much of that, it played exclusively in the large (1000 seat) auditorium. People waited in line for hours to buy a ticket only to wait more hours for a seat. This wasn't opening weekend, this was months after release.
People who weren't there, I'm not sure can really grasp how enormous of a cultural impact that film was in 1977-78,.but I thing Rogue One gives you all some inkling of it.
I have to say that Rogue one, for me, is on par with Empire: definitely in the top three of the Star Wars movies.
