Yeah, I'm far from being bitter.
But I sure can imagine justified reasons for some atheists to be bitter.
Imagine you are brought up from childhood, to believe in irrational, unevidenced BS. Further imagine, that along with this irrational, unevidenced BS, comes a whole lot of baggage, like; who you should hate, science you have to deny, and on overall distorted view of reality.
Now, further imagine that you are now are an adult, maybe in university, and you begin to critically examine your beliefs, comparing them to actual history, science, and logic and finding they just don't hold up to scrutiny.
Again, imagine how that person now feels, knowing that, not only were they lied to (not purposely, their parents were lied to, also), but much of their life was wasted filled with false beliefs.
Imagine one more time, now being free from the false beliefs, seeing the rest of the world, the vast majority still stuck in those false beliefs, making decisions based on ancient superstitious texts, that effect the rest of humanity. People blowing themselves up in public places, pseudoscience being taught in schools, homosexuals being denied rights, people flying planes into buildings, science being denied, etc are real world negative consequences of those beliefs.
Can you see why some of them may be a bit bitter?
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
