Some people have told me that this would lead to something such as a one party state. While that argument is understandable, I do think that would not happen.
People running for office should have to win over voters by convincing them they will do what the people desire.

No it wouldn't. The reason we have formal party system in politics is because it is far easier to subborn and corrupt the whole process when there is no such systemisation in place. Look at how the House of Commons worked up until the Irish Nationalists invented the whip system.
