In his case, it's probably attributable to cognitive dissonance.
Like I've said countless times, I used to consider myself leftist, but the democratic party has fallen apart, and I can't relate to anything they really represent. Not exactly a republican either however. I think the democratic party is having an identity crisis, and so is the RNC. The DNC used to be the party of working class, but now it morphed into the elitist coastal snobs the RNC used to be. The DNC and many Clinton supporters (that I know) look at the poor with disdain and contempt. They feel they are too stupid to make decisions so decisions have to be made for them. Throughout human history, people reject being told what to do and what to believe, and resent being called ignorant so that's a major reason I along with a lot of other people who left the left can't relate especially to what it's become. I don't see them turning it around very soon either unless they calm down a bit and start acting civil, otherwise it's a huge turn off.
This was a great interview I just listened to which lays out my thoughts almost exactly and much more eloquently.

What the fuck does "leftist" mean?
I know that evolution produces diversity, not just in our species but in all life. I also know that you cant create a utopia so the us vs them is bullshit. But right now, as far as our economy is concerned, the evidence is in. You cant simply let the rich do whatever the fuck they want all the time.
"Calm down"?
Trump is the asshole who sold hyper nationalism and blamed everyone and offered himself as a God and cure to humanity.
Yes I do have a fucking problem with assholes.
