The AutoML project by Google is interesting but the starting point for AI taking over was reached before their project.
As for whether AI is a good thing or not - I'm not sure. But we humans are a greedy, selfish lot and tend to be pretty dumb when making decisions with long term consequences.

A fellow called Marvin Minsky did the first "perceptron" artificial neural net back then, which seemed to learn rules instead of old hard coding.
However, autoML seems to be the first large work when it comes to to designing the configuration of those automatic rule learners.
As if it weren't already bad enough that jobs are already being automated left right and center.

My bet is on Kurzweil for human level brain machines for 2029!
Even though human brains may be much more complex than Kurzweil knew when he made that prediction? I roughly agreed with Kurzweil's prediction until I found out what's going on with recent neurological focus on dendrites.
I would have to research the details more.
I saw a may 2017 video about Ray recently, and he still presents his 2029 prediction. As he is the chief at google with high prediction accuracy, my bet is on his prediction for now.
It seems noteworthy that he says that we will have machine human level brain power, but not consciousness by that time.

The thing you need to worry about is the Geordie contribution to computer science.
Y.I.
If you are talking about Geordie of dwave, it seems he moved with associate Suzanne Gildert to make an AI firm called kindred AI.
