The fact that there are necessary risks in life doesn't mean that we must indiscriminately accept unnecessary risks.

Why? If my neighborhood was becoming dangerous, I'd get better locks, maybe a security system, and start looking at places in a safer neighborhood. I don't see that it's virtuous to leave my doors unlocked just because that's what I've done in the past. Fear isn't necessarily a bad thing.
