Why do some religious people think the world revolves around them?

I live in a Catholic dominated town where adults believe in prophets of this day today and they believe in ghosts. I find it hard to believe you.
Prophets and ghosts don't imply that the needs of one person are more important to the universe than the needs of many other equals. I've known plenty of people who say that type of thing knowing more or less that they're doing it for the temporary comfort it affords, but who give me the impression that they don't actually believe it or take it all that seriously. That, to me, is unheard of. The moment I read the OP, I immediately thought "well, ok. But surely you can't think your FIL literally believes that"
