Being courteous costs me 0.0 cents. Just because someone's taking your fucking order is no reason to fucking give it to them without the courtesy you (presumably, though I now have my doubts) would give to others.
That's just it, ain't it? It costs nothing to be 'courteous'. People do it either because they were fuckin' raised to do it, or because it makes them feel better (despite doing jack shit for the person behind the counter). If you really want to thank someone, leave some money in the tip jar. A 'thank you' sure as shit ain't going to help them make their rent or pay their bills.
No, but a "thank you" is a small way of saying, hey, I know you've got a crummy job, but I want to let you know I appreciate you being here.
I leave tips all the time. It doesn't relieve me of the obligation to be courteous, nor does it diminish the value of the social lubricants we call "manners". The barrista behind the counter slinging your coffee is a human being just like anyone else. Simply because they're on the clock doesn't make them any less so.

Dad used to say that all the time while pounding manners into me.
