At least if most people were deists it wouldn't affect anything about their everyday lives. It's because they go that step further and project their own desired attributes on their deity that it becomes a problem. The inevitable conflict it creates because of its own inconsistency and impossibility just hurts their cognition and prevents them from seeing reason.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?
