CBS Evening News noted the driver of the truck could well be eligible for Texas' death penalty.
While the anger is understandable, even in this case, trafficers don't intend to kill anyone. they want you to make it so when you do get a job hey can bilk you like a slave. Otherwise Bush should be on death row for all the civilian deaths he caused in Iraq sold on lies. I am not fond of the death penalty in any case regardless. The driver should be locked up for life, but killing him will not bring the dead back.
The driver was most likely desperate for a better life just like the passengers that died. No, he does not deserve the same sympathy as those who died. But the motive to make ends meet is the same. One was done out of greed, the other, the passengers was done out of survival. But both are still about survival.
It is the same as the San Francisco fire. The owners may have felt they were providing cheap living and making money at the same time. I think climate and conditions not individuals set the stage for both the criminal and the desperate to go their respective routs.
The truck driver most certainly deserves punishment. But long term, class issues and economics as far as pay gap have to be addressed, otherwise both perp and victim will will take dangerous short cuts.
