I think personally what you're seeing is the loudest ones. There are plenty of Christians who aren't like that in my experience.
As far as those that are, you can probably blame the fundamentalist movement.
^Exactly this. The overwhelming majority of Christians are no different (outwardly) from normal people. They're concerned with things like getting their kids over the flu, keeping the lights on, and not pissing off the boss. It's the ones who place Jebus so far above daily life who make all the trouble.
Loudmouths (in anything, not just religion) are an annoyingly vocal subset.
