They didn't.
But has that facility flooded before? If they had, I'd bet they'd have done more. I have a two guys that I was in the military with that now work for DuPont at chemical facilities. The shit they have to go through is insane.
I have a company with a lot of chemicals and there are a shit ton of hoops that have to be jumped through that are redundant and I think are too much. If we had a 3.0 earthquake, we'd be okay. If we had an 8.0 earthquake, we'd be Dicked. The chances that we would is slim to none, but.... what if we had a 3.0 earthquake and then a tornado? I'm not going to prepare for that. No one would.
That company has insurance, but they also now have to hire attorneys outside of their corporate attorneys, production down time that for a plant like that has to be hundreds of thousands of dollars per day, lost customer contracts that aren't going to be met, millions in clean up cost probably, a corporate black eye, easy Pickens for their competitors to swoop in and snag customers under a new contract, etc etc etc.
People that think companies go in all whilly nilly and don't care at all, clearly didn't earn their high school diploma and should probably just give it back. There are share holders/owners for that company sitting around at this very moment concerned about the hundreds of millions being lost because no one ever guessed that it was possible.
People and companies learn from mistakes. Sometimes that's the only way you can learn and sometimes that's the best way to learn. I bet that company won't make the same mistake again though.
I don't follow? Your saying they didn't know about the other 2 massive floods? Or they don't know that if flooding happens nearby repeatedly it could be them next time? It's not just that the damage to the business, it's the pollution, too.
