Nope, Italians are "Wops" in the vernacular.
Fun fact: I grew up in a town called Wahpeton, ND. For reasons no one could fathom, our school nickname was the Wops (I'm not joking). Our mascot was a guy in a purple and gold sheet, said to represent "Wop spirit" -- whatever the hell that meant.
About 5-10 years after I graduated, they changed the name to Huskies. I don't know if the decision was made out of a tardy sense of decency or whether all six North Dakota Italians staged a protest.
