There are plenty of Hellish people in this life. Fat gluttons, grizzled old hags, perverts,bullies, prositutes and thieves.
They likely live in a hell of their own making and live without joy or love for their fellow man. They are sad and evil..
If sadness and evil exist on earth...might not evil and sadness exist for eternity in a different land?
Christianity did not invent hell. All cultures and religions of the world recognized Hell and it's eternity, from buddhists to muslims to pagan romans
