To be a continent where ownership of fire arms is the exception, not the rule.
To be in a society that understands that the average Joe should not have access to guns.
Heck... it's so rare for people to carry guns that even the British police officers don't carry them.
Still, weapons appear here... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_te...93present), but, when they do, they're usually brought from the outside.
The US has a huge problem with guns.
Your politicians will never do anything about it....
Obama tried and got kicked down... Trump would even go the other way!... so you guys are stuck with it.
If the leaders don't impose it, society must.
The myth of gun for self-defense is statistically laughable. Sure, a few cases here or there occur where it works.... but, for the most part, when it's required, there's no way to reach for the gun.
And easy access for the average Joe means easy access for the average nut with a death wish.
I don't care if this particular individual had a tumor or whatnot.... he had access to a series of high powered rifles. What's that for?! hunting deer 5 miles away?!
Gun culture and American culture are essentially the same thing. Our founding was with an armed revolt. Ever since, we've romanticized, even fetishized the ownership of firearms. They've always been a symbol of power, especially white male expansionist power. Armed resistance is how we beat back the British. It's how "the west was won." It's how we saved the world in WWII.
Moreover, as I said in another post, there's a ton of people here who think that owning firearms is the only way to keep government honest. That we're perpetually dangling over the edge of tyranny, and firearms are the only thing keeping us somewhat grounded.
I mean, this is a country where gun ownership is considered a right, but access to healthcare isn't. Our priorities are completely fucked, and events like this do absolutely nothing to change that. If the massacre at Sandy Hook didn't do anything to address it, this sure won't.
