The #1 thing the NRA relies on is fear. Fear that the government is going to take away your right to have certain weapons, like assault rifles. So, the people drinking the Kool-Aid hurry up and buy more firearms and ammo before that happens (even though it hardly ever happens).
Again, these are people who genuinely believe that an armed populace is a polite populace, and that firearms are the only thing keeping the government from sliding headlong into abject tyranny.

Fear is the driving factor but the rationalization is when mass shootings take place there is a chance that guns will be banned so people buy and stock weapons while it is still easy to get their hands on them.
When Trump came into presidency people knew the anti gun laws won't hold much water and were much more relaxed and guess what happened..the share value of companies that make guns went down.
Just after this recent mass shooting the share values went...up.
Seems kind of convenient.
