Putting the differences behind and working to achieve something good for everybody is just not on the list, it's always "me and my people only".Why would it take faith to see the basic goodness or rationality of humanity? In any case, neither human goodness nor rationality are required for unification. Just a common interest.
Think of all of the people who joined together to stone gays so that god wouldn't be angry at them?
Consider that my pasty ass wouldn't have been taken to be white just a few generations ago.
"Me and my people" is a historically fluid term. It expands and contracts.....but I doubt that there's ever been a time in our history that the designation has encompassed so many disparate people as it does today. Those trumpstyers, till "my people"..it just so happens that I have a cousin I'm embarrassed of. I think we've all got a cousin like that. As regards those embarrassing cousins...I don;t worry that the ultimate fate of humanity lies with them.
