It's not so much they hate the idea of a god. They just find the way you guys describe your god to be an evil prick. I mean what kind of god says "I'm going to punish you for not believing in me, and then give you no evidence to do so!" What kind of god says "I'm going to punish you for having sexual relations with someone of the same sex, because I really care about that shit for some reason.' Evil prick incarnate.
Yeah, I don't think it's that we're upset at the idea of some sort of abstract thing that created the universe.
But the most popular religions don't end there. Their god is a voyeur, judging people on how well they can fight their programming, programming that this creator supposedly gave us to begin with. The clingy, passive-aggressive type that, on the one hand says "I only want your love," but on the other punishes those that don't want to give it. That, IMO, is detestable.
Space whales that farted existence into being? Cool. The id of a particular Jewish sect? Not so much.
