I'm not a metal head. I tend to only like obscure progressive metal. Tool is about as mainstream as I get and they're actually classified as 'hard rock', I think. Despite them not really sounding like other hard rock (which usually isn't very hard)... Tool are just Tool.
And a lot of stuff I hear that is considered 'metal' sounds both too poppy and too cheesy and also not heavy enough, to be what I normally think of as 'metal'.
Although I do especailly despise screamo and death metal. As if that screaming and throatsinging constitutes 'singing' then why even fucking have it. It sounds shit. Better without the vocals.
I'm not talking about the occasional scream or shout used for effect though. Tool and Riverside are experts at that, for example. But screaming or throatsinging all the time sounds fucking shit to the ear. Something extreme starts to feel bland if it's constant as it destroys all sense of contrast.
