Random thought:
What if we, all animals and humans alike, were all a part of a God-being.
This God would be maximally powerfull, but unsure of its own benevolence.
Thus, it created a test for itself; designed a world in which all of its parts would come into being without its maximal & vast, prior knowledge. And however we react, at the end of time, all souls that have ever been will reform into that God being. Thus, this existence is the test of a potentially (and from this world evidently) imperfect God. But not as much to test us, but to test itself.
I don't believe this, of course, but it would have the potential of being a far less bigoted and far more peaceful religion than some of the others. I'd see pacifism and altruism as key concepts as hurting others would be hurting yourself, in the long run. I'd see its followers as more motivated and willing to take their own fates into their hands and try to fix injustice and unfairness and horrors in the world on their own, rather than relying on a God as there would be no reason to think it'd intervene, after all, we'd be that god, and we'd be on our own.
