Mh.brewer for how many years you have been in religion? What was the worst part?
That's hard to put a number on. I left evangelical lutheranism when I was 13. I'm sure I didn't understand any of it until about age 5. I recall the nicey nice songs and stories. You know, the brain wash days. Noah's flood was a good thing, Samson and David were hero's. Moses was the magical wizard leader of freedom. Jesus did even more magic. It was all unconditional love which would save me from evil.
Then, as time passed, there was a slow and subtle turn from life is wonderful if you do believe to life will be pain and torture if you don't believe.
About age 11 or 12 the questions started for which I was given poor or no answers and I was told by the junior pastor "don't question, just believe". I started to recognize the religious hypocrisy in my parents and other adult members (do as I say not as I do). I also recognized the manipulation of members by the church pastors. At the end it all came down to belief in either ultimate reward or punishment. I just couldn't by the premise any more.
So, at 13, I started walking out on services. My parents got the hint.
Worst parts: heard mentality, hypocrisy, manipulation.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
