From a business stand point though, the companies that do that have some very low margins and their profit's aren't high. Manufacturing companies anyway. And with those business structures comes high turn over, higher than average injury rates, and higher than average quality issues. All of which takes an even deeper cut into the opportunities for profit and growth.
The choice to stay with an employer like that is a personal choice. BS of the company's side, but they probably aren't far from being outsourced to China or Mexico if that is how they are operating.
