Why is Christianity and Islam so widely practiced?

How is it that these two are practiced by a combined 2 billion people around the globe. What is it about these religions that have given them the ability to maintain control over the masses? Also, why is it people still associate with religion? Such as specific denominations? Not really sure why you'd want to always be told what you can and can't do by some crusty old men. But that's just me.
