To me this is not real ST but more like an experiment (if not ST in alt universe) that is also hybrid of BSG and ST and some popular trends. I mean I guess it's an interesting experiment but what bothers me most is that "story arc" of their experiments with that new drive and DNA which is not really interesting, let alone plausable and even worse it's pretty much against the prime directive because they're exploiting this giant tardigrades. I mean there was a similar two part episode in VOY when Voyager encounters federation ship that is trying to exploit beings from, what I remember, another dimension so that they can travel faster and Janway goes nuts because it's against prime directive.
The best episode was when they fought Mudd on Discovery and that was kind of "filler" or stand alone episode. Meaning it wasn't centered around that DNA drive.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
