It comes from having a family who doesn't know how to travel. I don't want to sound like I'm not a spontaneous person, but when you live far away from EVERYONE it becomes hard to "go with the flow" because you're not near your house or whatever where you can change into hiking boots or high heels depending on the situation. So I like to have a reasonable idea of what's going on so I can pack for it, plan money around it, etc, without being one of those girls who has to carry a 5 piece matched luggage set.
Being a former Jeep girl (and still one at heart) it bothers me if I have to bring more than two duffel-sized bags/suitcases on any trip unless it's for over a week. Pack small, pack light, have a plan (but allow for contingencies) and DON'T CHANGE THINGS WHILE PEOPLE ARE ON THEIR WAY (like my family does...CONSTANTLY).
Disclaimer: my sister is the kind of person to run roughshod over the rest of us and say one day "We're going to a fancy dinner on the 19th" and when the 19th arrives she'll have changed her mind completely (after everyone's arrived) and said "Nope, we're going hiking. I don't care if you can't go because you only packed high heels - you have to go!"
