The image was taken from above the equator of earth, and is centered just off the west coast of Africa.
The image is taken through a special infrared filter that emphasizes water vapor. Even over the driest areas there is still water vapor in the atmosphere so images in this range of IR do not show surface features, just "swirls of humidity" floating around in the air from pole to pole.
