I wonder if part of it is the ability to dehumanize people when they are on TV or on a stage of some sort. It doesn't mean the person doesn't have empathy, just that they are disassociating the screen with real human beings.
Though that still doesn't explain why actual enjoyment would come of it. Could be just something that was taught through socialization, like Rev said. But still strange though...
