Somewhere between a 6 and a 7.
I'm pretty sure that no literal god exists which excreted the galaxies and attends to my mutterings and private sex acts. But I'm also pretty sure that whatever it is that gave rise to god belief is still knocking around in my old noggin right where it has always been.
My suspicion is that whatever kind of consciousness we had before we went all propositional and abstract, created us in its very limited wisdom when the demands of human interaction just got too fucking hard for a simple mammalian brain to process. From its point of view I'm sure our form of consciousness is as fascinating as it is abominable. But we get the job done and the body is mostly no worse for wear. Evolution has pretty much dictated that humans which ran Consciousness 2.0 would be more successful so here we are.
I think religion is mostly nostalgia for the old ways. But I don't think Consciousness 1.0 which we call God really wants a lot of interaction with us. He is over there in the passenger seat now and would be most grateful if we just kept our eyes on the road and our hands on the wheel. I doubt that our burnt offerings mean all that much to Him. But what do I know? Maybe He just adores the religious who put Him on a pedestal and conduct elaborate ceremonies on His behalf. Could be. But I picture Him as more of a parallel-play kind of buddy, not a hearts and flowers kind of Guy.
