Is it because homosexuals are a minority, and humans naturally despise who isn't following the herd? Does religion preach against homosexuality so that it could attract the majority?
Religions become "leaders" by seeing which way the mob is running, then getting out front and yelling "follow me!"
Men have long been "instructed" by other men who are homophobes. These men were often the ones who are relentlessly obstreperous on the issue, and the overcompensation lead to hypermasculinity, making them the warriors and kings in the early days of our communal living.
This type is the kind of person the religious "leaders" ... sucked up to. (Pun sends thoughts and prayers your way.)
